Salt Dough Gone Wild!

It was one of those long stretches of summer afternoon when it was too hot to go outside. The kids slid around the house, skulking, with nothing better to do than pick fights with each other and in general, drive me nuts.

Days like these scream for distraction and that day a movie wasn’t going to cut it.  I scanned through my “Gonna try this” folder on Pinterest and saw a post about salt dough. Perfect.  It’s creative, it’s quiet, it’s unplugged, and even better, I had all the ingredients.

My kids, like most kids, love play dough.  When they play it’s a whole body sensory experience.  The dough ends up ground into their clothes, hair, crumbled all over the floor, and mushed into the carpet.  If it were cleaner, I would do it more often.

So, we made salt dough and I set the kids to the task of making dough people.  Soon the house was filled with laughing once more as they posed and dressed their creations.  One of the perks of salt dough is that once it dries it can be painted. Usually this process takes several days of air drying, or several hours in a warm oven.

I’m not that patient.  Plus, I read that salt dough can be speed dried in the microwave. Dough boy got nuked and turned out great.  Once he had cooled off he was indeed dry and ready to paint.  Dough girl was a different story.  She was long and thin with narrow delicate limbs. Dough boy was stocky and thick.

It wasn’t until I smelled the panic inducing smell of smoke that I realized my mistake. Dough girl was on fire.  I grabbed the plate and ran her outside, hoping to minimize the amount of smoke that filled the house. But it was too late.  The whole house reeked of burnt flour, which is oddly similar to the smell of burnt popcorn.

Dough girl was toast.

I braced myself for the tantrum that was sure to follow. It didn’t come. Instead, I found my daughter doubled up in laughter.  She thought the whole incident was hilarious!

There was enough dough for her to make another, and this time I made sure not to light it on fire!

Retreat!

This weekend I attended my first ever writer’s retreat high up in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. For the first time in years I had hours of uninterrupted time to sit and work on my book.   It came at a great time as well, for the past few weeks I’ve whittled away at the final scenes and not made any progress. Being away from my crazy normal life gave me a chance to clear my head and think through the different emotions and images that have eluded me.  Now I just have one concluding scene, and this draft is finally done!

Not only was this my first retreat, but I was also on the committee.  If fact if I hadn’t been, I probably wouldn’t have been able to justify going. Having invested many hours organizing and finding answers to questions, I was all the more committed to make this retreat a success.  It turned out fabulous, if I do say so myself.  Everyone seemed happy, the food was wonderful, there was plenty of free time to write and to spend time chatting with fellow writers.

There really is nothing like being around people who share the same passion.  It creates a closeness that’s almost impossible to find anywhere else.  Working together to make each other’s writing better and sharing ideas creates bonds of friendship that last.

I give out a huge thanks to those who made it possible and our awesome speakers who shared wonderful insights into their writing and the craft itself.  Working with and getting to know these wonderful women has been a delight.

The retreat has recharged my creative batteries and I feel ready to tackle my writing projects once again!

Blast from the Past – Writer Mom Comic “Interrupted”

Happy Labor Day everyone! I hope your day is filled with family and fun. To celebrate the holiday, here is the last of the 2011 Writer Mom series. This one looks different because while I was making it I lost the paper I was working on and ended up creating a photoshop mashup instead, which admittedly turned out pretty cool.

Blast from the past – Writer Mom Returns

Although today is supposed to be a short story day I don’t have one prepared, so here’s the second comic in the Writer Mom series! Enjoy!

Blast from the Past – The First Writer Mom Comic

About two years ago, when my children did not outnumber my hands, I made an attempt at creating a series of comics.  The situation hasn’t changed much, now there is a different child on my lap trying to push buttons and the other two somewhere else in the house causing untold havoc.  On a unrelated note, school starts this week!  Happy Dance!

I might finish this manuscript yet!

After precisely three minutes of working on the manuscript, writer mom is discovered.

Open Mic

Due to this week being a bit crazier than I expected, today’s post is what I’m calling an open mic. Everyone out there in cyberland is welcome to ask whatever questions they like down in the comments and I will do my best to answer honestly and promptly.  The best or most interesting questions will be used to start a FAQ page in the header of this blog.

That means shameless self promotion for anyone who asks a question. Woohoo!

Ready? Go!

Please be kind 🙂

Gearing Up for my First Blog Hop

I’m taking my own advice and participating in the Summer Giveaway Hop of 2013.  From what I’ve heard, this is one of the coolest hops around.  As of today there are over 100 blogs participating and giving out all sorts of great stuff.  The opening day is this Thursday and that is when my official post for the giveaway and the rafflecopter will go live.

summer 13 giveaway hop[1][1]This will be my first blog hop and I’m both excited and nervous.  Part of me worries that I’m going to mess something up and be kicked off the hop.  I’m crossing my fingers that I get all the links and widgets working in time and everything goes smoothly.  Thousands of people might be coming by and seeing my space here.  I can only hope they like what they see and perhaps stick around awhile.

This is a giveaway hop and most blogs are giving away copies of their books. There are even a few giftcards, t-shirts, as well as some other things.  Since I’m not published, yet, I don’t have a free book to giveaway.  I’m crossing my fingers that that will change in the next year or so. Instead, I’m giving away some pretty awesome swag.

If you enter here, you can enter to win a beautiful notebook, two fancy pens, and a handmade wire bookmark.  There will be a picture of the bookmark on Thursday, I have to make it first!

So, if you are reading this don’t forget to come by Thursday and put yourself in the raffle, tell your friends, the more the merrier! From here you will be able to link to all the other blogs in the hop and sign up for their raffles as well.  It’s like a giant global blog party, don’t miss it!

Until Thursday – Happy Writing.

Don’t do dumb things – Texting and Driving

Although this blog is mainly used for entertainment purposes, today’s post is deadly serious.  I happened to come across a disturbing and eye opening public service announcement video that I feel is important enough to share. It is my hope that by sharing this message the current attitude about texting while driving being okay, will change.

A Case for Texting while Driving

Before you watch this video be warned, it is graphic and intense.  If you are overly sensitive to seeing human tragedy, I suggest you skip it.  To be honest, when I finished watching I felt physically sick. This accident is a reenactment of a real accident that killed four people in Tredgar, located in south-east Wales. The Tredegar Comprehensive School and Gwent Police banded together to create this teaser for a longer video created to emphasize how dangerous it is to text and drive, especially for young or new drivers.

This isn’t the only video about a tragedy that has happened because of a distracted driver, there are dozens if not more online.  With the coming of new and better technology available for phones and personal devices this problem will only continue to grow.

For this, I plead with you –

Don’t do dumb things.

The world is a fantastic and wonderful place filled with fascinating people and thrilling adventures. Too many accidents happen when people fail to think through their actions beforehand. They think, “That could never happen to me. I’m careful. I’ve done it before.”

It’s not if the accident will happen, with this attitude, it’s when.

I grieve for all the families who have suffered tragedy and death due to texting and driving.   I don’t know about the rest of you, but today I’m holding my babies tighter and praying that the people driving around where they play and go to school put their phones away and pay attention.  No should ever have to bury a loved one because of this.

Oh, and wear your seat belt

To leave this heavy message on a brighter note, here is perhaps the best commercial for wearing a seat belt. It’ll make you cry, but in a good way.

If you feel this message is important, speak out! Share, reblog, tweet, pin, and be a part of the solution.  You can make a difference!
